  • Depending on the medical insurance plan you choose, you will receive either a $100 or $300 monthly HRA-VEBA contribution to help offset the out-of-pocket medical expense exposure. Click here to learn more about HRA-VEBAs
  • New or existing employees that are adding dependents (spouse/domestic partner, child, step child, adopted child) are required to submit verification documentation for each newly enrolled dependent. Click here for more information and video on how dependent verification is completed.

Medical Insurance

The City offers five options for medical insurance. 2025 Plan Summaries are linked below containing a short Summary of Benefits, and the Booklets linked below are an in-depth summary of coverage for each plan.

Opting-Out

Employees may choose to opt out of the City’s medical insurance plan and receive a monthly HRA-VEBA (Health Reimbursement Account) contribution equal to 50% of the EMPLOYER cost for medical coverage for you and your family.  Click here for more information.

Dental Insurance

The City offers two options for dental insurance:

Vision Insurance

The City provides vision insurance through the Vision Services Plan (VSP). The $10 copay vision benefit includes:

  • One eye exam, paid in full, every 24 months.
  • One pair of frame and lenses (or contact lenses), paid in full (to allowable charge) every 24 months.
  • More details on the VSP Plan Summary.

Life Insurance

The City pays for salary-based life insurance from The Standard equal to 125% of your annual salary. This plan also features travel assistance including pre-trip assistance and help during a trip (finding medical care, legal assistance, emergency evacuation, document replacement, and repatriation of remains). View the flyer and plan description for more information.

In addition, the City pays for Accidental Death & Dismemberment (AD&D) coverage for bodily injury or death from accidental means. The coverage includes Occupational Assistance to support an employee’s efforts to return to work.

You can choose to buy additional life insurance for yourself and/or your spouse. Read more here.

Long-Term Disability Insurance

The City provides long term disability (LTD) which pays a portion of your salary should you be disabled and unable to work for an extended time.

AFSCME employees receive 60% of your salary after a 90-day waiting period.

Public Employment Retirement System (PERS)

In Washington, local governments and their employees contribute to the funding of employee retirement benefits.  Non-represented employees are members of either Public Employees’ Retirement System (PERS) Plan 2 or Public Employees’ Retirement System (PERS) Plan 3.  Click here for more information.

Social Security Contribution Limits

The Social Security wage limit for 2025 is $176,100.

Employee Assistance Program (EAP)

The City has expanded the EAP benefits for employees provided through the AWC.  Benefited employees may receive up to 8 EAP sessions annually per person, per issue.  Click here to learn more.

457 Deferred Compensation Plan

2025 Limit: The contribution limit for 457 plans in 2025 is $23,500 (up from $23,000 in 2024). Catch-up contribution limits for those over 50 are at $7,500.

A 457 deferred compensation plan allows you to save and invest money for retirement with tax benefits. Contributions are made to an account in your name for the exclusive benefit of you and your beneficiaries. The value of the account is based on the contributions made and the investment performance over time.  A 457 plan is designed to supplement your retirement income. While a pension and/or Social Security may go a long way, they are unlikely to be enough. Saving to your 457 plan can help you maintain your desired standard of living.
